Shooting Suspect Cheyne Kehoe’s Trial Set For Jan. 7

Associated Press

One of two brothers accused of shooting at law enforcement officers in a confrontation captured on videotape will go on trial Jan. 7, a judge said Tuesday.

Judge William McCracken set the date at a pretrial hearing in Clinton County Common Pleas Court for Cheyne Kehoe. Kehoe, 21, of Colville, Wash., remains in jail under a $5 million bond.

Kehoe and his brother, Chevie Kehoe, 24, also of Colville, are accused in shootings that occurred minutes apart Feb. 15 in the Wilmington area, about 50 miles northeast of Cincinnati.

The first shootout was videotaped by a dashboard camera in a State Highway Patrol cruiser and broadcast nationwide. The trooper had stopped the brothers’ vehicle for having expired Washington license plates.

The Kehoes have pleaded innocent to charges of attempted murder of a police officer, felonious assault and carrying a concealed weapon.

Prosecutors said they expect Cheyne Kehoe’s trial to last three or four days. Chevie Kehoe already is scheduled for a Dec. 8 trial before McCracken.

Cheyne Kehoe is accused of firing at a state trooper and a sheriff’s deputy from close range. Chevie Kehoe is accused of firing at two police officers a few minutes later. The officers were not hit.

Cheyne Kehoe surrendered in Washington in June. His brother was arrested a day later in Utah.

Prosecutors in Arkansas want to extradite Chevie Kehoe and another man, Daniel Louis Lee, 24, of El Reno, Okla., to face capital murder charges in the killing of a gun dealer, his wife and stepdaughter in January 1996.

The brothers and their families were staying on a southern Utah farm before Cheyne Kehoe turned himself in and federal officers captured his brother at a Cedar City farm supply store.
