Unexpected Aerial Attack Lifts Hawks

Prep football

When was the last time a Lakeland High School football team attempted 30 passes?

Lakeland coach Terry Kiefer suspected never - at least not while he’s been around the past two decades.

Kiefer’s Hawks needed every attempt, too, as they fell behind used a three-touchdown third quarter to pull away from St. Maries, 43-22, in an Intermountain League game Friday.

Lakeland secured a state playoff berth, raising its league-leading record to 4-0 and 5-1-1 overall. St. Maries’ playoff hopes were damaged. The Lumberjacks (1-2, 5-2) will need to beat Moscow and hope Lakeland beats Moscow in the final game of the season.

“Did you ever think you’d see Lakeland throw the ball 30 times,” Kiefer asked rhetorically.

That’s more than double the number Kiefer’s teams usually attempt. But after falling behind 16-0 in the first quarter and with the Lumberjacks stuffing the run, Kiefer turned to the arm of senior quarterback Kurt Reese.

Reese responded by completing 17 of 30 passes for 263 yards and two TDs. Dan Ross caught one of the scoring passes and added two other long touchdowns.

St. Maries scored on its first two possessions. Fullback Justin Hall finished off a nine-play, 47-yard drive by bulldozing into the end zone from 2 yards out. Hall scored a two-point conversion on a trick play.

The Lumberjacks took advantage of a short field minutes later when quarterback Skyler Willard hit Caleb Krebs on a 4-yard out for a second TD. Willard faked the hold on the extra point then ran for a twopointer, putting St. Maries ahead 16-0 with 2:14 left in the first quarter. However, Lakeland didn’t waste any time coming back.

Ross brought the ensuing kickoff back 92 yards.

The Hawks pulled within 16-14 when Ross, a wide receiver, broke off a 42-yard TD run on an inside reverse with 51 seconds left before halftime.

Lakeland took its first lead at 20-16 on the opening possession of the second half.

On third-and-10 from the St. Maries 18-yard line, Derek Felton took a pitch from Reese and hit wide-open Mike Moore, who stumbled into the end zone.

St. Maries responded quickly, scoring in four plays. Willard hit Krebs on a 50-yard strike after the Lumberjacks receiver got behind Ross. St. Maries couldn’t convert a two-point attempt but led 22-20.

Lakeland scored on its next two possessions.

Ross took an inside screen and broke one tackle before outsprinting the Lumberjacks 51 yards for the first. After Willard threw an interception on St. Maries’ first play following the kicked, Reese connected on a 25-yard strike to Jason Hindberg that extended Lakeland’s lead to 34-22 with 3:49 left in the third quarter.

Lakeland added a safety later in the period. The Hawks scored their final TD with 9:57 remaining when Nick Badraun dashed 14 yards after Ross set up the score with a 70-yard inside reverse.

St. Maries coach Curt Carr shook Kiefer’s hand afterward, telling him he got the last laugh. Carr was alluding to the fact that he most likely will resign at the end of the season.

“They riddled us with the passing game,” Carr said. “We played hard. And we’ve still got a chance. But it’s going to be tough after losing (Cory) Nemeth. I thought we moved the ball well, we just ended up having to throw too much.”

Nemeth, St. Maries’ starting running back, left the game early in the first quarter with what’s believed to be a separated shoulder.

Ross caught five passes for 78 yards and one TD and rushed three times for 106 yards.
