Mott Leads U-Hi Sweep As Titans Take Gsl Title

University’s boys and girls wrapped up cross country titles Wednesday, although the girls’ first banner will be split.

Seth Mott led a 1-2-3 sweep as the Titans (9-0) turned back Lewis and Clark and Central Valley in a Greater Spokane League-ending meet at Liberty Lake Park.

U-Hi’s Jaime Miller won the girls race, but LC (7-2) picked off four of the next five spots for a 24-32 win over the Titans (8-1). Mead’s girls also finished 8-1 after a double win at Esmeralda Golf Course.

Mott completed the 3 miles in 15 minutes, 59 seconds. Kris Martin and Dan Chavez followed, then Nick Vollmer of LC (6-3).

U-Hi’s boys captured their second title. The other was a three-way tie in 1984.

Miller ran 19:07, topping LC’s Jamie Borgan by 18 seconds. LC’s Mindy Noble, Sara Larsen-Cooper and Jamie Rosenquist crossed before seventh-place Wendy Wagar, the top finisher for CV (4-5).

Elsewhere, the Mead boys (8-1) earned second place with a double win at Esmeralda guided by runners-up Josh McLellan and Chris Deulen. Jim Rucker (15:53) led the whole way for Gonzaga Prep (5-4). Fifth-place Ryan Keeney of North Central (4-5) broke up Mead’s pack.

Annie McCabe (19:05) led most of the way as Mead earned a share of its ninth title with a double win. Third-place Carly Barnes led five top-12 runners for G-Prep (4-5).

At Ferris, Dan Schruth (15:43) tacked the first league loss on Tom Becker (15:57) of Mt. Spokane (3-6), leading the host Saxons (7-2) at the three-way. Ferris ran 3-6.

Shadle (6-3) tripped up Ferris 27-30 in the girls race, with third-place Linaia Jones leading a charge of six Highlanders in the top nine. Emily Hawkins (18:27) of Ferris (5-4) completed a perfect league season.

Travis Hanson’s first year as Mead coach resembles Dick Cullen’s previous 11 years.

Ashli Anderson’s goal from 20 yards out broke a shutout at 27 minutes and started Mead toward a 5-0 win at CV.

The Panthers (15-0, 8-0) clinched the GSL title for new coach Hanson. Cullen coached 11 consecutive GSL titles before becoming Mead’s activities coordinator.

Mead also earned a berth to the State 4A playoffs. The Panthers will host the district title match Nov. 5 for seeding to state.

The Bears (7-6, 4-4) played without six injured starters.

Also in the league, G-Prep kept its playoff chances alive with a 4-0 win at Rogers; U-Hi remained in second place with a 4-0 win over host LC at Hart Field; Ferris edged visiting Shadle 1-0 to snap a third-place tie with LC; and Mt. Spokane nipped NC 1-0 in a shootout.

At Rogers, Bridget Harrell punched in a rebound off the goalkeeper in the opening minutes to launch G-Prep (10-5, 4-4) over the Pirates (2-13, 0-8). Rogers’ Kelley Jochec shot just over the crossbar in the second half.

G-Prep, with 12 points, is one point behind fifth-place CV for the final district spot. League play wraps up Friday, with the Prep against Mead and CV against Shadle.

At Hart Field, Casey Lektorich headed in Megan Black’s crossing pass in the first half and kicked in a loose ball in the second half to guide the Titans (10-3, 7-1) over the Tigers (7-6, 5-3).

At Ferris, Megan Cumming’s direct free kick at 50 minutes lifted the Saxons (10-5, 6-2) over the Highlanders (5-10, 2-6). Cummings bent a shot around a Shadle wall and into the far post after a foul outside the penalty box.

At the Complex, Casey Kitchen, Ashley Anderson and Seneca Shank scored during a 3-2 shootout to guide the Wildcats (3-10, 3-5) over the Indians (2-11, 1-7). Anderson missed her first attempt, but was given another when the goalkeeper moved before the shot.

Senior Zach Blume and freshman Samantha Clarke led St. George’s to Panorama League titles on their home course.

Blume repeated his title, completing the 3 miles in a wire-to-wire 17:42, 11 seconds ahead of Springdale’s Jesse Klemish. Clarke’s 20:37 shaved 1:20 off her best on the course.

Seniors Bryan McCarty and Ann Marie Adams won races as East Valley repeated as boys and girls Frontier League champions with dual wins at Cheney on Tuesday.

McCarty completed the 3 miles in 17:10, winning on a lean over teammate Jim Marlow. Adams and EV’s Korinda Godwin and Melissa and Melanie Frostad were all credited with times of 20:24.
