WSU Volleyball Moves Up In Poll To 6th

After starting the season with four wins at its annual tournament, the Washington State volleyball team moved to No. 6 in this week’s USA Today/American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25 poll.

The Cougars (4-0), No. 7 in the preseason, did not drop a game to Texas-Arlington, Santa Clara, Wichita State or Gonzaga.

This weekend at Spikeoff Spokane, Washington State will meet No. 20 Notre Dame Saturday at 8 p.m. The Fighting Irish, No. 17 in the preseason poll, defeated Oral Roberts and Louisville, but lost to Wisconsin, which moved from No. 18 to No. 14 this week.

Preseason favorite Stanford, meanwhile, fell to No. 3 behind No. 1 Penn State and Florida. The Nittany Lions beat the Cardinal in three games at Stanford’s tournament.

Bulldogs victorious

Shelly Messinger took control when Gonzaga fell behind Boise State and led the Bulldogs to a comeback 12-15, 16-14, 9-15, 15-11, 15-11 victory.

Diane Pascua had 26 kills and 17 digs and Theresa Spink 16 kills and 18 digs to join Messinger in rallying GU to the road win. Messinger added 16 digs.

Elmore top assistant

Mike Elmore of the Coeur d’Alene Golf Club carved out a four-stroke victory over Alan Jenkins of Esmeralda in the Inland Empire PGA Assistants Golf Championship on Tuesday.

Elmore followed a 1-over-par 73 at MeadowWood in the morning with a 5-under 65 at Liberty Lake in the afternoon for a 138 and $500 first-place money. Jenkins, who led after the morning round, shot 72-70-142.
