Bruins Maul No. 11 Texas

Associated Press

Pac-10

Nothing worked for 11th-ranked Texas. Everything worked for UCLA.

The final score, 66-3, was staggering not just because UCLA was an 0-2 underdog, but because it was on the home field of the defending Big 12 champions.

“When the landslide starts, it’s hard to get it to stop,” said second-year UCLA coach Bob Toledo, vindicated after being second-guessed for fourth-down play calls late in narrow losses to Washington State and Tennessee.

“The guys are going to be embarrassed,” said Texas coach John Mackovic. “What do you say to friends and family who see this score? If you’re saying what went wrong? I don’t know, everything went wrong.”

Cade McNown threw a school-record five touchdown passes and Skip Hicks scored three times as UCLA (1-2) enjoyed its second-biggest scoring margin - the Bruins defeated San Diego Naval Training Center 67-0 in 1954 - and handed Texas (1-1) its second-worst defeat.

Not since 1904, the seventh year of the Texas program when the Longhorns were beaten 68-0 by Chicago, had the school been beaten so badly.

And this one came at home in Austin.

“I’m shocked,” said backup Texas quarterback Richard Walton, who started in place of James Brown, out with a severely bruised left ankle. “I’m embarrassed to be a part of this loss, and I feel largely responsible. I had a chance to lead this team and I didn’t.”

The Bruins forced eight turnovers, six leading to touchdowns.

At Chapel Hill, N.C., backup quarterback Oscar Davenport threw for two touchdowns and 116 yards as the Tar Heels (2-0) defeated the Cardinal (1-1) to extend their home winning streak to seven games.

Davenport, inserted for two possessions in the first half and three in the second, completed his first nine passes on the way to a 12-of-14 performance. He led a pair of long TD drives, including the score that put North Carolina ahead to stay early in the fourth quarter.

(24) ASU 23, (13) Miami 12

At Miami, Ryan Kealy showed he may indeed be the successor to Jake Plummer as he led the Sun Devils (2-0) to an upset of the Hurricanes (1-1).

The Sun Devils, overlooked in the preseason polls despite winning the Pac-10 title, got a big game from Kealy, a redshirt freshman. He completed 18 of 26 passes for 239 yards and a touchdown.

Tailbacks Mike Martin and J.R. Redmond both ran for more than 100 yards. Martin had 105 yards and a touchdown. Redmond added 103 yards and also caught five passes for 46 yards.

Arizona 24, UAB 10

At Tucson, Ariz., Trung Canidate put some life in Arizona’s soggy offense with a 66-yard scoring run and 192 yards overall, and the Wildcats (1-1) sacked Alabama-Birmingham freshman Lee Jolly six times to defeat the Blazers (0-3).

The game was delayed 33 minutes by a lightning storm, and rain fell intermittently throughout.

But the weather had less to do with the game’s slow pace than Arizona’s ball control - the Wildcats ran for 365 yards.
