Book Lists Dog-Friendly Places To Stay

It’s tough to leave Bowser behind when you go on vacation. Increasingly, though, inns and hotels are willing to take dog with owner. A new guidebook will tell you which hotels and B&Bs in California, Oregon, Washington and British Columbia will welcome your pooch.

The book is part of the “On the Road Again With Man’s Best Friend” series by Dawn and Robert Habgood. Lodgings that are reviewed range from the Columbia Gorge Hotel near Hood River, Ore., to the Alexis in Seattle. While the book’s content hugs the coast, a listing in the back - The Best of the Rest - covers the three states and the province more thoroughly. The book is $19.95 (ISBN: 0-933603-04-5); for information about guides to the other regions, call (800) 93-DAWBERT.

Looking inland

And while we’re talking guidebooks, the one of the new books in Moon Travel Handbook series is just out, the “Idaho Handbook” by Don Root ($18.95/ISBN: 1-566901-088-9). It’s actually the third edition of the book, and includes new information on recreating in Idaho - skiing, whitewater rafting, climbing and mountain biking.

We’ve used the “Alberta Handbook” ($17.95) and found it both accurate and useful (the second edition of that book is now available).

And, for those Yellowstone-bound travelers, the third edition of the “Wyoming Handbook” ($17.95) also is just out.

Add miles while you sleep

Mountain tunes

Seldom have we associated the Rocky Mountains with jazz, but, really, it seems like a natural paring. The folks in Kalispell, Mont., think so, too.

The Glacier Jazz Stampede will be staged Oct. 9-12 and the four-day bash includes music ranging from Dixieland, rag and swing to zydeco and Latin-tinged tunes.

For ticket and scheduling info call Karla West at (406) 862-3814.

Those heading to Montana a little early can sign up for the Montana Mushrooms workshop at the Glacier Institute, Oct. 3-5.

Participants will learn about the fungi of Montana and then head to the woods armed with skillet and butter to gather and sample some of the fall mushrooms - all under the tutelage of an expert, of course.
