Out With The Old

Electricians replace burned-out bulbs on the Times Square New Year’s Eve ball in New York City on Wednesday. The 500-pound aluminum ball will be retired after it ushers in the new year with its trademark minute-long descent tonight. A new ball made of crystal being manufactured by Waterford Crystal in Ireland will be in place next year to usher in the new millennium. Tonight’s festivities will be a dress rehearsal for next year’s extravaganza. There’ll be brand-new music and sound effects coming from speakers mounted on 10 buildings, a 16-foot-tall puppet of Father Time, three gigantic video screens, 27 extra spotlights including what is billed as “the most powerful searchlight in the world” and even an extra half ton of confetti.
