Dollar Falls As Yen Strengthens

The dollar fell Tuesday against the Japanese yen, which gained strength from rebounds in Southeast Asian currencies and markets.

The dollar also was down against the German mark and Swiss franc.

“The market is not quite ready to get out of dollars by any means, but it’s losing inspiration for any fresh buying of dollars,” said Lisa Finstrom, senior currency futures analyst at Salomon Smith Barney Inc.

The yen’s strength came as Malaysian shares soared 23 percent and stock markets in Japan, Taiwan and South Korea also climbed. The yen also has strengthened on expectations the Japanese government will take additional measures to mend the weakened economy.
