Series Of Surprises At 158 Marks District 8 Wrestling

High school wrestling

There were few surprises during Friday’s first day of the District 8 wrestling championships at Mount Spokane High School.

Except in the 158-pound class, where three of the top four seeds found themselves in the losers bracket.

Second-seeded Josh Sicilia of Mead was decisioned by Lewis and Clark’s Ronnie Russomano 11-7. Third-seeded Tyson Davin of Ferris was pinned by Central Valley’s Mike Easton at 1:01 of the third period. And No. 4 seed Scott Cruess of Mead was decisioned by Gonzaga Prep’s Paul Koehler 6-4.

Among the four seeds in the weight class, only top-seeded Nick Bliss of G-Prep made it to today’s semifinal round.

Gonzaga Prep grabbed the lead in the team standings with a firstday total of 129. Central Valley was second at 126.5.

3A Sub-Regional

Being seeded in one of the top four spots didn’t matter much at the 3A Eastern Sub-Regional tournament at Moses Lake.

Nineteen of the top 54 seeds were sent to the losers bracket after the first day.

The biggest upsets of the day were in the 122-pound and heavyweight classes.

Cheney heavyweight Blake Falor decisioned No. 1 seed Drew Kok of Yakima’s West Valley 5-2. Clarkston’s Matt Phillips (122) decisioned top-seeded Raul Mendoza of Sunnyside 13-8.

The 115-pound class was the only one where the four top seeds made it to the semifinal round.

East Valley compiled 139 points to grab the first-day lead in team scoring. Moses Lake was second with 130.
