Teen Charged In Robbery Of Officer, Family

Associated Press

A 15-year-old Federal Way boy has been charged in the robbery of a Des Moines police sergeant and his family in their home.

Officers arrested the boy the morning after the Feb. 12 attack on Sgt. Bob Collins and his family.

The youth was charged Thursday with first-degree robbery, kidnapping, burglary and theft of a firearm. Police arrested him after he was seen running near one of Collins’ vehicles that had been stolen during the robbery and abandoned nearby.

Officers say the youth confessed, and investigators found the Collins’ family computer, printer, television and VCRs in his home.

Four other teens - three 17-year-old boys and an 18-year-old man - have been arrested, but charges have not yet been filed.

Investigators say five teens held Collins, his wife, 15- and 17-year-old sons and 10-year-old daughter at gunpoint for over an hour.

According to charging papers, the teens looted the home after tying up the family.
