Abortion Bill Analysis To Be Ready In 10 Days
Legislative leaders expect to get a legal analysis of the Idaho Family Forum’s abortion bill within 10 days, but the battle over abortion already is warming up.
Legislative leaders talked of possibly rushing the measure through the House Ways and Means Committee and to the full House for debate in just a matter of days.
But Rep. Ron Crane, R-Caldwell, said Friday he expects there will be full debate and discussion of the measure in the committee he heads, State Affairs.
“I don’t think people will settle for anything less,” Crane said.
The huge Republican majority in the House was advised at a closed-door party caucus early in the week that at least some of the abortion measures being circulated will come to a floor vote.
Meanwhile, the Idaho Women’s Network had four street corner demonstrations in Boise in steady rain Friday to “voice their concern about current challenges to reproductive choice in Idaho.”
Just two blocks from the Capitol, volunteer Jennifer Benedict said the group will rally against the anti-abortion proposal on Wednesday at the Statehouse.
“Abortion is already strictly regulated in this state,” Benedict said. “More positive efforts should be given to preventing unwanted pregnancies than bringing this issue up again.”
The conservative Christian group, Idaho Family Forum, has prepared a measure among other things “to delete potentially unconstitutional provisions” in current laws.
State Rep. Mark Stubbs, the Twin Falls lawyer who is seeking the Republican congressional nomination in the 2nd District, said he will probably be the chief House sponsor of the bill although he has not made a final decision. , DataTimes
