Cv, Lc Stay Tied With Wins

GSL boys

The difference was subtle but significant.

Central Valley slipped past Mead 65-61 Friday night simply because the visiting eighth-ranked Bears moved their feet better in the second half.

“At halftime, Coach said to stop their penetration, they were killing us,” CV senior Marc Hinckley said. “When we stopped the penetration of their guards, they couldn’t dump the ball off.”

When the Mead guards got inside, they dumped the ball to 6-foot-8 Brian Wolverton, who was perfect on seven shots, five in the first half. If the guards shot, Wolverton had inside position for offensive putbacks.

Without penetration, Wolverton only got two baskets in the second half and got into foul trouble while Hinkley had eight of his nine rebounds.

CV (11-2 overall, 10-2 GSL) stayed tied for the Greater Spokane League lead with Lewis and Clark while Mead (9-5, 8-4) dropped to third. LC plays at CV on Tuesday.

It also helped that CV hit its free throws, 24 of 30 for the game. Three of the misses came after the Bears got the lead to eight, the biggest of the game, at 65-57 with 39 seconds left.

“The key down the stretch is we missed the front end of three one-and-ones and they made their free throws (when it counted),” Mead coach Jim Preston said. “In a big game like this, often times it’s one little thing.”

There were five ties and eight lead changes through three quarters. The last lead change came when CV reserve guard Craig Eigenhuis hit a big 3-pointer from the top with 56 seconds left in the third quarter to put the Bears up 47-45.
