Join The Fun At Logan Area Block Party

Clowns, cotton candy and classy cars are among the items on the agenda for the Sixth Annual Logan Neighborhood Block Party.

Festivities begin tonight at 4 p.m. in the Fourth Memorial Church parking lots at the corner of Indiana Avenue and Standard Street.

“It’s 99 percent just plain fun with a little spirituality thrown in,” said Block Party Chairman Charlotte Karling. “We want people to know that churches are made up of people who care.”

Because of the large number of volunteers required to staff the party, this year’s event will be compressed into one day.

The block party is made possible by donations from area non-profit organizations like the Anna Ogden Home, Mission Community Outreach Center, Easter Seals of Spokane and the Salvation Army, as well as more than 125 businesses.

“It attracts all ages,” Karling said. “We have a Humvee from the Washington National Guard and a helicopter coming in. We have classic cars and hot rods, a dunk tank, basketball, football and other sports events, pony rides, a climbing wall and a sawdust dig for the tiny kids.”

In addition to games and rides, the free party will feature country-western music by Herrick’s Pride and Christian rock by Skypark. At 4 p.m., 300 local youth will perform a musical, “In My Father’s House.” The 8 p.m. stage show features an illusionist and a drawing for door prizes.

The sweets, songs and sports, however, are only a backdrop for the party’s primary purpose.

“It’s about neighborhood,” Karling said. “That’s what it’s for.”
