A young Eagle Scout has earned his wings. Chris Plummer, who earned Boy Scouting’s highest rank by building 12 screech owl boxes at the Ice Harbor Juvenile Fish Facility and Lost Island Habitat Management Unit, is the son of Mark F. and Ruth Plummer. He is a junior at Washtucna High School.

Ferry County Memorial Hospital is looking for volunteer green thumbs to help with its garden. Hoping to garner community support for the 19-year-old project, Mildred Couse is looking for local groups or individuals to commit to weeding and watering. “The pay has been great,” she said. “It is great satisfaction to see the happiness the garden brings to our residents.” To lend a hand, call Couse at 775-3427.

Moses Lake
School’s out and for many underprivileged children in the basin, so is lunch. A recent report by the Children’s Alliance, says up to 6,300 area children may be going hungry this summer. More than 2,600 children are eligible for free and reduced meals in the Moses Lake School District, but often no program is in place to serve those lunches.

Davenport
Davenport police soon will have another set of wheels. The city council approved the purchase of a new police car for nearly $26,000 on a 4-3 vote. Councilman Mike Stormo called the purchase a waste of money. “We have a car that’s only 3 years old,” he said. Others against the purchase said the price tag was just too high. Federal grant money will be used to cover $10,000 of the purchase.

Newport
It’s fun and it’s free! All are welcome to an afternoon concert at Newport City Park on Sunday. Sponsored by the citizens group CREATE, the afternoon kicks off with the Jamambo African Drummers and wraps up with the Mud Bay Jugglers from Olympia. Five Deer Park residents were honored by two area schools for their work during the 1998 spring semester. At the University of Idaho, Angela Pittz (School of Business and Economics), Jaidean Watson (Business and Economics), Brian Dart (Letters and Science) and Jaime Stone (Forestry, Wildlife and Range Sciences) were honored for academic achievement. Emily M. Sobczuk, a Riverside High School graduate and a senior at Gonzaga University, was named to the President’s List for earning a grade-point average of at least 3.7.

Riders are back in the saddle - the bike saddle, that is - for the annual “Sunshine at 49 Mountain Bike Festival” on Saturday and Sunday. Featuring the state championships in dual slalom and downhill, the event is part of the Wild Rockies Mountain Bike Series. Higher education is paying off for Pullman’s Matthew J. Crowder. A senior at Washington State University, Crowder has been hired for an internship with Marriott International Inc. in Chicago. Through the internship, Crowder will gain hundreds of hours of hands-on education in his major, hotel and restaurant administration. A 1994 Pullman High School graduate, he is the son of Wayne and Marge Crowder of Pullman.

A public meeting is scheduled for Aug. 1 to discuss the cost of a permanent budget override for the Gateway Fire Protection District. The budget is $26,000, and if passed, the override would raise it permanently to $96,000. Approximately 740 residents of the Gateway Fire Protection District are registered voters and 60 percent approval is needed for the override to pass. The meeting will be at 1 p.m. at the fire station. The election is scheduled for Aug. 4 at the Gateway Fire Protection Office at 910 C St. Polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Explore the natural world through drawing with Rod Barcklay. Sponsored by the Northern Idaho Audubon Society, the class will be conducted in the woods and gardens surrounding Seven Oaks Community Center at 6 p.m. on Aug 13. Barcklay taught science and art classes at Rocky Mountain Academy for 13 years and teaches art classes at Bonners Ferry High School. No decision has been made in the Wes Aamodt condemnation hearing that began July 24. Shoshone County District Court Judge Craig Kosonen will visit the Wardner property in question today. The trial resumes after the court returns to Wallace. Aamodt owns several lots in upper Wardner and has refused the property easement offered by agencies representing the Milo Creek project.

Libby
Both Pepsi and Coke have offered Libby High School exclusive rights to sell their drinks on campus. Each has offered seven-year deals. Counting goods such as software and vending equipment, Coke’s total offer is $37,400 while Pepsi’s is $38,150. But only Coke has made its best and final offer, Assistant Principal Doc Sargent said.
