Cannons Set Pace In American Legion

The Cannons are making the most noise early in the Senior American Legion baseball season.

Derek Wohlers pitched a three-hitter and benefited from a pair of three-run homers Tuesday as the Cannons (4-1) defeated the Bandits 12-3 in five innings at Gonzaga University.

Chris Hilsabeck homered in the second and Shae Lanphere homered in the third for the Cannons, who have opened a 1-1/2-game lead over the Bandits (2-2) and two other teams.

Tennis

Deadline for entries for men and women planning to compete at the Spokane City Closed Tennis Tournament is Friday at 8 p.m. The annual tournament will run from June 24-28 at the Hart Field courts.

The tournament is open to city and Valley residents, but not to college summer school students or workers outside this area.

The prize money is as follows: $200 to the men’s open singles winner; $100 to the men’s open singles runner-up; $40 to losing semifinalists. Entry fees are $14 for all singles events and $18 per doubles teams.
