Several Students Cited In Jazz Competition

The outstanding students competing at the University of Idaho Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival have been announced.

Moscow: Moscow Junior High, directed by Melissa Kleinert, Junior High Choir runner-up; Moscow All-City Elementary Band, directed by Nikki Crathorne, Elementary School Band winner; St. Mary’s Elementary School, directed by Nikki Carthorne, Elementary School Band runner-up; Danielle Pals, Moscow Arts Commission Choir, Vocal Soloist runner-up.

Sandpoint: Sandpoint Middle School, directed by Jon Brownell, Middle School Choir runner-up.

Three winners, chosen out of 519 entries, have been named in the local “Spring into Recycling” poster contest sponsored by area school districts and county waste management organizations.

Grade K-2 category: Alyson Houghton a second-grader from Fernan Elementary School was chosen for her poster of a deer carrying recyclable products to collection containers. She received a mountain bike, safety helmet and biking accessories.

Grade 3-5 category: Nathan Bloom, a third-grader from John Brown Elementary School was chosen for his poster theme of Earth surrounded by recycling symbol arrows depicting materials collected through the school recycling program. He received a Nintendo 64 game system, two game controllers and a game cartridge.

Grade 6-12 category: Ian Dahlke, a sixth-grader from Lakes Middle School chosen for his original concept poster presenting Earth within a circle trash gauge (used to measure garbage) signaling that the planet is nearly full of trash. He received a Sony Discman and a Hastings gift certificate.

David Koepl, of C & R Plumbing and Heating, and Chris Saganski, of Parrott Mechanical, both of Coeur d’Alene, were recently honored at the Associated Builders and Contractors Inc. National Craft Olympics competition in Phoenix.

Koepl, took third place in the plumbing category and Saganski won third in the sheet metal category. Both were sponsored by the Inland Pacific Chapter of ABC.
