Bonner County Still Investigating Makeshift Bomb

Bonner County authorities have confirmed that a device dropped off at the sheriff’s office over the weekend was a crude homemade bomb that failed to explode.

The courthouse was cordoned off Sunday when a man drove in with the bomb inside a plastic bucket. The man, whom police have declined to identify, said the device was put inside his wood stove by someone who wanted to kill him.

The Spokane bomb squad used a robot to remove the bomb from the courthouse parking lot on Sunday. When investigators examined it at a safe location, they discovered the bomb contained nearly 2 pounds of black powder.

Authorities said it was not a pipe bomb, but the material used to hold the powder could have caused injuries if the device exploded.

The fuse on the device had been lighted, but fizzled out.

Another package, with a digital watch on it, was attached to the black powder, but no other explosive devices were found.

Detectives are still investigating the case to find out who made the makeshift bomb and left it at the man’s home near Dufort Road.
