Bauer Helps Team To Gold In Lake Placid

From Staff Reports

Deb Bauer of Spokane and Russia’s Svetlana Perlov went head-to-head on more than one occasion at the Masters World Championship cross country ski races that wound up last Sunday in Lake Placid, N.Y.

Bauer came away with a team gold medal and a silver and bronze in individual competition. The Russian won the gold in both events, beating Bauer by 20 seconds in a 10K skate race. Bauer was third in a 20K classic.

Then skiing the classic second leg for the United States in the 4x5K relay, Bauer went against Perlov.

“Our first skier gave us a little lead of about 40 seconds,” Bauer said. “She (Perlov) caught up a little, but I had a lead of about 25-30 seconds (at the end). It was fun.”

In Bauer’s third individual race, a 30K skate, she fell and had to settle for fifth.

“When I went back, I thought that would be my best chance of winning because I had been doing a lot of longer skate races,” she said. “I was in the (lead) pack, but on the only real technical downhill, I fell. It was the end of the week and my legs were not as strong as they had been and just gave out.”

Bauer is pointing for the U.S. championships in early April.

“The girls from the Olympic team will be there,” she said. “If I can have a good showing there, it will kind of set me up. I’m looking forward to the Olympic trials in four years.”
