Freeman Is Hoping For State Berth
A better-than-expected regular season could lead to a state berth for Freeman’s softball team.
Freeman finished second in the 11-team Great Northern League with a 16-4 record.
The Scotties are currently involved in an eight-team league playoff that sends three teams on to Yakima.
They played twice yesterday, opening against Deer Park, then meeting either Chewelah or Kettle Falls.
Wins in both would have clinched a state berth. Results are in today’s sports section.
Consolation play continues today at Medical Lake’s Waterfront Park.
“I didn’t think we would be 16-4,” said coach Scott Carolan. “It was the GNL. I thought we’d be in the middle of the pack.”
Freeman suffered a mid-season setback when all-league pitcher Leslie White suffered a broken cheek-bone when hit by a line drive against league champion Colville.
She returned to finish 16-0 for the year. Michelle Kiddoo, hit .484, Nikki Roecks .411 and Kaci Reed .404.
Also making the All-GNL team were Kiddoo, Roecks, Helda Dahmen and Lynzie Abbey. They weren’t the only contributors.
“Somebody besides certain players picked us up offensively,” said Carolan. “Each game it was somebody new. That’s neat.”
And a shot at the State A softball tournament was the result.
