Reliving Antarctica
Rock climbing
Conrad Anker, a California climber with a big name for taming big walls, will be in Spokane this week to tell of recent first ascents in Antarctica.
Anker will present a slide show Friday, 7 p.m., at Mountain Gear, 2002 N. Division. The show features climbs in Antarctica recently documented in National Geographic magazine, with climbers Alex Lowe, Gordon Wiltsie, Rick Ridgeway and Jon Krakauer.
Donations for the Access Fund, a national campaign for recreation access, will be accepted at the door. Recently, Anker established a difficult new line on Yosemite’s El Capitan called Continental Drift. So far, no one has made a second ascent.
He’s put up new routes in Patagonia, Baffin Island, and Antarctica, as well as on Latok II in Pakistan’s Karakoram.
Anker also will be at Mountain Gear on Saturday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., representing North Face merchandise and signing posters.
