Now that school is under way, it’s time for area churches to enter into their fall season. This week marks the beginning of fall worship schedules and programs at several South Side and West Plains churches.

Manito United Methodist Church, 3220 S. Grand Blvd., will mark the beginning of Sunday school at 9:45 a.m. Sunday. Two classes for adults will be included: an adult Bible class with the theme “God Calls People to a Faithful Living” and a video series called “Faith and Reason.”

Sunday also marks the beginning of the fall worship schedule. Services will now be offered at 8:45 and 11 a.m. each week.

Cheney’s Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 639 Elm St., begins its Sunday school classes for all ages at 9:30 a.m. Sunday. Worship is at 10:30 a.m. and will be followed by a short ground-breaking ceremony for the church’s new elevator.

A potluck barbecue gets started at 11:30 a.m. The church will provide the meat.

For more information, call the church office at 235-6300.

Highland Park United Methodist Church, 611 S. Garfield, will register for its church school at 10:15 a.m. Sunday. The Sunday school teachers will be recognized during the 10:30 a.m. worship service.

An ice cream social will follow the service at 11:45 a.m. and include games and prizes.

Westminster Congregational United Church of Christ, 411 S. Washington, will also begin its Sunday school classes on Sunday. Adult Bible study classes will be at 9:30 a.m. each week, and Sunday school classes will run during the 10:30 a.m. worship service.

Hamblen Park Presbyterian Church will begin its fall schedule on Sunday. Worship and Sunday school begin at 9 a.m. and another worship service begins at 10:30 a.m.

The church will continue its annual tradition of holding a bake sale during the primary election on Tuesday. A variety of baked goods will be available from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. The church is located at 4102 S. Crestline.

Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 314 S. Spruce, will start its Sunday school season on Sunday with classes at 9:15 a.m. A worship service will follow at 10:30 a.m.

The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th, will resume its fall schedule on Sunday. Services will now be offered at 8, 9 and 11 a.m. each week.

This week also marks the beginning of the Sunday school program. Parents are asked to register their children for Sunday school after the 9 a.m. family service.

Cheney coat drive on now

The Cheney United Methodist Church is once again participating in the Cheney Helping Cheney Community Coat Drive that premiered last year. The church will collect coats of all sizes (adults and children) from Monday through Oct. 2.

The coats will be cleaned and then distributed for Salnave Elementary School on Oct. 17.

Last year’s effort by 10 churches, six schools and several local businesses netted more than 300 coats.

For more information on the coat drive, call the church office at 235-4600. The church is located at 204 Fourth.

Unitarian Church hires two

Two new staffers have joined the ranks at the Spokane Unitarian Universalist Church, 4340 W. Fort George Wright Drive. Erin Fitzgerald, the new religious education and program director, comes from Long Beach, Calif., where she had over 10 years of supervisory and management experience in three Unitarian Universalist churches.

The new office administrator, Carla Brannan, has been a member of the church for more than three years and has participated in the choir.

Rummage sale will be Saturday

Central United Methodist Church, 518 W. Third, will host a rummage sale Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
