ADAMS COUNTY Ritzville
Shawn Pichette, a Washington State Patrol trooper, was assigned to the Ritzville detachment recently. Pichette is a graduate of Harrington High School, just 20 miles away, while his wife, Jodie, is from Ritzville. Pichette got his first taste of law enforcement as a reserve officer for the city of Ritzville.
FERRY COUNTY Republic
Ferry County Prosecutor Steve Graham plans to take the tribal bar examination soon so he can practice in tribal court. Graham needs the certification to represent the county in a pending lawsuit.
GRANT COUNTY Ephrata
Miss Ephrata 1999 is Ashley Ponozzo; princesses are Killey Leonard and Sarah Thompson. The trio will ride the community parade float and travel the state as official ambassadors of Ephrata.
LINCOLN COUNTY Reardan
Reardan Memorial Library is looking for pictures of Reardan in pioneer days. The photos are needed for the annual Mule Days celebration June 5. Anyone with old pictures of the town and its people is urged to contact the city, which promises to return all photos after they have been displayed.
PEND OREILLE COUNTY Ione
Auction items are needed for a fund-raiser for a new playground. The Metaline Falls Playground Consortium is planning the Lillian Bailey Playground dinner and auction on May 1 at Papa’s Place. Tickets are available at the school and Airport Grocery. The consortium has raised $25,000 for playground equipment to be installed this summer.
SPOKANE COUNTY Spokane
Spokane’s annual All-City Kite Festival will be from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday at the South Side soccer complex at 46th and Regal. Several awards - including for best homemade kite and the kite that looks most like its owner - will be given in stunt kite and single-line kite competition. The event is being sponsored by the Spokane Parks and Recreation Department and the Lilac City Wind Chasers Kite Club.
STEVENS COUNTY Chewelah
Stevens County Public Works Director Duane Lehman says closure of Jump Off Joe intersection is “a dead issue.” Lehman, who had hoped to close the intersection as dangerous and reroute traffic at another point along U.S. Highway 395, dropped the issue last week. Some residents had opposed the plan.
WHITMAN COUNTY Pullman
The musical thriller, “Sweeney Todd,” continues tonight and Saturday in the R.R. Jones Theatre at Daggy Hall on the Washington State University campus. The play, which won eight Tony Awards when it opened, is celebrating its 20th anniversary. The grim tale of a fiendish barber who kills his victims and makes them into meat pies that become increasingly popular on the streets of London is R-rated for graphic violence and adult subject matter. Tickets range from $4 to $8 and may be reserved by calling the Daggy Hall box office between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Tickets also will be available at the door.

BENEWAH COUNTY St. Maries
Jim Felix of St. Maries has been recognized as 1998 Idaho Logger of the Year by the state tree farm committee. Felix was nominated by Steve Cuvala of the Idaho Department of Lands, who inspected at least half a dozen James Felix Logging sites under the Forest Practices Act.
BONNER COUNTY Sandpoint
Beginning Monday, Sandpoint Independent Highway District employees will pick up and chip tree limbs from spring pruning or winter cleanup. Property owners should pile tree limbs at the curb or edge of the street with the large end of the branches facing the street. To have limbs chipped, residents must call the highway district at (208) 263-8131 before Wednesday and give their name and address.

The Boundary Community Hospital health fair will be April 24. Children are invited to bring their teddy bears for a teddy bear clinic. The event also will include a bike rodeo, free health screenings and a fun run beginning at 8:30 a.m. For information, call (208) 267-3141.

Approximately 70 businesses, corporations and agencies will be on hand from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today for North Idaho College’s sixth-annual job fair. Community members and NIC students will be able to visit with a variety of employers from Washington, Idaho and Oregon who are seeking permanent and temporary employees. The job fair will be held in Christianson Gymnasium.
LATAH COUNTY Moscow
The University of Idaho’s Martin Institute for Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution is sponsoring a panel discussion on “Kosovo - What Now?” at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in the UI Student Union Building ballroom. The second free informational program on the Kosovo conflict, it will focus on the difficulties in bringing a peaceful conclusion to the military and political crisis in the Balkans. A four-person panel will discuss options for each party involved in the conflict.
SHOSHONE COUNTY Wallace
The East Shoshone Quick Response Unit is sponsoring a steak dinner today to raise funds for a new $40,000 emergency response vehicle. The dinner will be from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Wallace Elks Lodge. The quick response unit’s services are provided by volunteer emergency medical technicians through donations from the public.

LINCOLN COUNTY Libby
A public meeting on spring flow operations at Libby Dam will be held at 7 p.m. April 27 at the dam’s visitor center. Representatives from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bonneville Power Administration and National Marine Fisheries Service will present information on discharge and refill plans, how the project fits into the Columbia River system and how salmon/sturgeon recovery work affects the project.
