ADAMS COUNTY

Othello

Progress is being made at the new park site on Cunningham Road. Volunteer crews have moved 80,000 yards of dirt in their quest to build community softball and soccer fields. Workers are now ready to hook up to city water and sewer.

FERRY COUNTY

Republic

Ferry County Fair board members announced recently that quilting would have its own category this year. Categories for competition include hand-pieced, machine-pieced, embroidered, hand-applique, crib quilts and accessories.

GRANT COUNTY

Moses Lake

The city of Moses Lake has received its first statue. A gift from the people of Yonezawa, Japan, the bronze statue is of two children releasing a dove of peace.

Yonezawa has been Moses Lake’s sister city since 1981. An exact replica of the statue graces Moses Lake Boulevard in Yonezawa.

LINCOLN COUNTY

Reardan

Cindy Valeri is the proud parent of a Reardan High School wrestler. Valeri recently was honored as the Northeast A League’s “Outstanding Parent.” She is not only supportive of all the athletes, including her son, Chris, but she organized food for wrestlers at several meets and assisted with fund-raisers.

PEND OREILLE COUNTY

Newport

Rod Owen was chosen Volunteer Outstanding Citizen of the Year by the Pend Oreille County Watchdogs. Owen, owner of Owen’s Grocery and Deli in Newport, has spent 10 years as a volunteer firefighter and is acting chief. His community service includes volunteer work with the local police commission, chamber of commerce, Kiwanis, and Maws and Paws Booster Club.

SPOKANE COUNTY

Spokane

Public and private universities and colleges from Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington will attend a college fair hosted by the Spokane County 4-H, 222 N. Havana, on Wednesday from 1-9 p.m. Call 477-2048, Ext. 109, for more information.

STEVENS COUNTY

Colville

Local band “Nothin’ Serious” certainly takes its music seriously. The group recently released its first recording. Out on CD is “Old, Borrowed, New, Blue,” which features a mix of blues and jazz classics, as well as original works. The CD is on sale at several Colville stores, and at Hastings in Spokane.

WHITMAN COUNTY

Steptoe

Dave Bragg, an area extension agent and Garfield County entomologist, will discuss 1998 research results for controlling aphid and Hessian fly in spring wheat at a meeting Tuesday. The Whitman County Ag Tech Association breakfast meeting starts at 6:45 a.m. at Hartley’s Wheel Inn in Steptoe. For more information, contact the WSU Cooperative Extension office in Colfax.

IDAHO

BENEWAH COUNTY

St. Maries

No charges will be filed against an Upriver School instructor who was accused of being involved in an altercation with a student. A student accused Doug Strong of injuring him after the student was assigned to serve in-school suspension. No evidence of a physical altercation was found by a deputy investigating the case.

BONNER COUNTY

Sandpoint

Bonner County 911 service will begin Monday. Lakeview residents served by Midvale Telephone will not be able to use the system to contact the Sandpoint dispatch center, but will instead use the appropriate seven-digit numbers.

BOUNDARY COUNTY

Bonners Ferry

Due to unseasonably spring-like conditions, County Roads 4 and 6 from Highland Flats Hill to McArthur Lake are closed to hauling. Other closures may be made on short notice. The closure does not affect those hauling animal feed or perishable food items, although the speed limit has been reduced to 20 mph. Temporary permits are available on a case-by-case basis for other haulers. For more information, call County Road and Bridge at (208) 267-3838.

KOOTENAI COUNTY

Coeur d’Alene

Apple Corps, the Coeur d’Alene School District mentoring program, is seeking volunteer reading and math buddies. Volunteers are needed for an hour or more a week to help elementary school students. LATAH COUNTY

Moscow

A public forum to discuss the cost of an education in Idaho and the impact of future student fee increases is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday in the University of Idaho Law School courtroom. Speakers include Tom Boyd, member of the Idaho Board of Education, Doc Lucas, former Idaho state representative, Mahmood Sheikh, ASUI president, Steven Peterson, a UI research economist, and representatives from the UI administration.

SHOSHONE COUNTY

Kellogg

The Kellogg Chamber of Commerce and Kellogg Project Uplift are working to start a Silver Valley Heritage Tour. The tour committee is applying for grants to support the project. The tour will include 10 monuments throughout the city displaying historic photos of the mining and timber industries. Photos will be contributed by the Kellogg Library and valley residents.

Libby

Lincoln County Campus Director Russ Poppen will leave the college in May. Poppen has accepted the position of director of the Ketchikan Campus of the University of Alaska Southeast. Poppen was LCC director for two years. His Alaska position will begin May 17, three days after LCC graduation.
