Anyone can dream up a lame New Year’s resolution. But it’s an affirmation, a mantra-like form of positive internal chatter, that truly inspires.

Unlike New Year’s resolutions, affirmations last. According to true believers, a single well-worded sentence has the capacity to keep people charged all year long.

An affirmation can be repeated first thing in the morning, last thing at night, or anytime during the day when life gets tough.

Spokane readers recently shared their favorite affirmations. We list them here with the hope that they’ll help power your new year. Long after you’ve abandoned all those unimaginative plans regarding dental floss and brussels sprouts, this wisdom will remain.

“I’ve got a plaque on my wall that I just love.

“It says, `Grant me patience Lord, but hurry.’

“It never fails to bring a smile to my face and it helps keep me humble.”
