Bears Follow Eigenhuis’ Lead

Central Valley was struggling with its deadly outside game but it was only a matter of time and a question of who.

The time was the start of the second quarter and the who was Craig Eigenhuis.

Eigenhuis hit a pair of 3-pointers 3 seconds apart to jump-start the Bears to a deceptively big 57-40 win over visiting Lewis and Clark in a battle of unbeaten Greater Spokane League boys basketball teams Saturday night.

CV was trailing 13-10 after hitting just four of 16 shots in the first quarter. Taking the ball to start the second, Eigenhuis hit a 3 from the top of the key 11 seconds in to tie the game. On the play, LC was called for a foul under the basket and the Bears kept the ball. The ball was inbounded to Eigenhuis who hit from almost the same spot and the Bears were off and running.

“That was really the momentum change,” Tigers coach Terry Reed said.

LC got a free throw, but Jake Hebden drilled a 3 and Mike Krieger scored off an offensive rebound to cap an 11-1 run that put the Bears up 21-14 just 3 minutes into the second quarter.

The Tigers never recovered, mostly because CV’s defense wouldn’t let them and because they couldn’t figure out which CV player to stop.

Bryan Depew had 10 points for CV, six coming on three inside baskets in the first quarter when the Bears were struggling from the outside. Hebden had 10 points after an 0-for-5 start. Eigenhuis had nine, as did leading scorer Kyle Boast, who had just two at halftime but dished out six assists.

And on this night, the leading scorer was Patrick Libey with 11, nine in the second half after sitting out more than 10 minutes in the first half with two fouls.

“That’s the way this team is, it’s always somebody different,” CV coach Rick Sloan said. “It seems like every night, there’s a different player of the game. It’s a real unselfish team.”

The Bears also handled LC’s pressure, committing just one turnover in the first half, and forcing the Tigers into 10 miscues to go with 8 of 18 shooting that became 14 of 40 for the game.

“First, we played pretty good defense,” Sloan said. “Second, we took care of the basketball on offense. They were trapping us and pressuring us. This team is a pretty heady group and they make good decisions with the basketball.”

The Bears were up 30-24 at the half and with Libey taking control inside, upped that to 48-31 after three.

“I just knew I couldn’t foul or I would find myself back where I was,” Libey said. “We just keep moving the ball, any one of those guys can score … we keep moving it, doing the in and out game and it paid off.”

The Bears hit 8 of 11 shots in the third and finished 23 of 47 after the cold start.

“We’re all good shooters,” said Depew, who matched Libey with seven rebounds. “If they’re not shooting outside, we’ll just get it in… . We expected them to go a little tonight, we were looking for that.”

The game was the rough, physical battle both teams expected, but it was even, with the teams combining for just 19 free throw attempts.

Ferris 50, Rogers 44

The Saxons simply outshot the Pirates in the battle between the two teams picked at the top of the league.

Ferris, which jumped to an early 20-7 lead, hit 20 of 43 shots. Rogers, which battled back to lead several times in the third quarter, hit 14 of 41.

Chris Watts led Ferris with 17 points and Jeremy Williams had a season-high 10 and nine rebounds. Sam Dempsey, with 14 points, was the only Rogers player to reach double digits.

David Smith hit 6 of 7 free throws on his way to a career high 20 points that led the visiting Indians to their first win.

Mt. Spokane, despite an hour of free throw practice earlier in the day, made just 3 of 17 from the line. Casey Clark led the Wildcats with 21.
