CV Grad Plays Key Role For Cincy

Tanya Kirk of Spokane had a big week just before Christmas for the University of Cincinnati women’s basketball team.

Kirk, a senior from Central Valley, was named to the Aveda Bearcat Invitational all-tournamenmt team after Cincinnati defeated Coastal Carolina and Marshall to win the title. She had 28 points, 13 rebounds and three assists.

As the Bearcats have opened the season 7-4, Kirk is averaging 12.1 points and 5.5 rebounds. She is No. 3 on the team in scoring and No. 2 in rebounding. She’s 12th in Conference USA in scoring and in the top 10 in 3-point field goals and 3-point field-goal percentage.

Bill Hinz, a 1995 graduate of Pullman High School, received the “mental attitude award” at the Wabash College football awards dinner.

Hinz is a senior linebacker at the Crawfordsville, Ind., school, which went 9-1 and won the championship of the Division III Heartland Conference. He is also a nationally ranked hammer thrower for the Little Giants and has a 3.73 grade-point average in biology.

Spokane’s two freshmen on the Central Washington men’s basketball team, Corby Schuh and Justin Bursch, are making key contributions for the 9-3 Wildcats.

Schuh (Central Valley) is No. 6 in minutes played and averages 9.3 points a game, fifth on the team. Bursch (Ferris) is No. 7 in minutes and No. 3 in assists with 29 while averaging 2.9 points a game.

Freshmen Jamie Bornitz of Kootenai High School in Harrison, Idaho, and Christy Martin of Spokane (Ferris) are among the leaders on the Walla Walla Community College women’s basketball team.

Bornitz is No. 1 in rebounding (7.1) and No. 4 in scoring (7.25) and Martin is No. 2 in scoring (8.13) and rebounding (5.25).

Central Washington senior All-American wrestler Bart Orth of Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) has a team-leading 14-4 record at 174 and 184 pounds.

Brother Ben Orth, a junior, is 5-4 at 165 pounds.

Pacific Lutheran senior Ryan Pauling of Cheney finished 14th in the NCAA Division III cross country championships Nov. 21 in Carlisle, Pa., covering the 8,000-meter course in 25:26.48.

Pauling had won the West Region meet in a course-record 25:27 over 8,000 meters.
