Zoning Request Goes To Council Tonight

A proposal to build a mini-storage facility in the Latah Valley goes before the Spokane City Council tonight.

Hearing Examiner Greg Smith denied a zone change last October to Brian Layton, who is seeking to develop 100 storage units on seven acres along the Cheney-Spokane Road.

Smith ruled that the Latah Creek specific plan limits commercial development to a 22-acre site at the intersection of U.S. Highway 195 and the Cheney-Spokane Road. That property has a Tidyman’s store, a bank and a convenience market, plus room for more development.

The existing commercial property was farmed for years in vegetable crops and sold to developers when the several farm families reached retirement age.

The appeal hearing will be held during the council’s 6 p.m. meeting at City Hall.
