Cheney Still Site Of Camp For Now

The Seattle Seahawks intend to hold training camp at Eastern Washington University in Cheney, a spokesman for the NFL team said Friday.

But the spokesman, who requested anonymity, couldn’t make an ironclad promise, mainly because the topic was barely broached during negotiations with new head coach Mike Holmgren.

“They talked a little bit about training camp in Cheney,” the spokesman said. “There was no indication of any change in team plans.”

The Seahawks trained in Cheney, at the urging of former coach Dennis Erickson, the last two summers. Holmgren’s Green Bay Packers trained just across the street from famed Lambeau Field at the Don Hutson Center in Green Bay.

The Seahawks would be entering the second year of a three-year agreement with EWU.

“We certainly anticipate them being here,” Eagles athletic director Dick Zornes said. “We’re not real sure what’s going to happen, but the university wants them here and we’re willing to put together what we think is necessary to keep them at our place.”

EWU hopes to bring Holmgren to Cheney for a visit after things settle down in Seattle. It might pale in comparison to the wining and dining Holmgren just received from Seahawks owner Paul Allen, but EWU hopes it might sell the new coach on Cheney.

“That’s the next step for us,” Zornes said. “This is kind of a limbo time. Every contract has an escape clause and I know this one does. I would presume it would be some sort of cash settlement.”
