Woman, Children Flee House Fire

From Staff

A woman and three small children escaped a house fire that was apparently started when one of the children was playing with a lighter early Friday.

Damage to the home, near Woodland Park, was set at $175,000.

The only injury occurred when a 5-year-old girl cut her hand on a broken window during her escape, Fire Department spokeswoman Sheila Strehle said. The girl said she placed a sleeping bag at her door to keep the smoke out - a safety tip she’d learned from her parents.
