Hot-Shooting Waves Whip Gonzaga Women

Dana Sulenski hit seven 3-pointers and scored 23 points to lead Pepperdine to a 75-49 victory over Gonzaga in a West Coast Conference women’s basketball game in Malibu, Calif.

Freshman guard Jessica Malone led the Bulldogs with 15 points. Junior forward Kristin Deal had 10 for GU (4-10, 0-2 WCC).

Sulenski’s first 3-pointer gave Pepperdine a 3-0 lead and the Waves (10-4, 2-0) led throughout the game.

The score was 25-16 before Malone scored five consecutive points, drawing the Bulldogs within 25-21 with 4:24 remaining in the first half. By halftime, it was 42-23.

“It was a lack of execution and defense that hurt us,” Gonzaga coach Kellee Barney said.

Whitworth 70, George Fox 56

Star Olson and Jamie Wakefield combined to score 36 points, 27 in the second half, to lead the Pirates to a Northwest Conference victory over the visiting Bruins.

Whitworth (8-4, 4-2) erased a four-point deficit with a 14-0 run midway through the first half and never looked back.

George Fox’s Christy Brock led all scorers with 21 points but she had to take 21 shots to get them.

“Tonight we played 40 minutes of great basketball,” said Whitworth coach Helen Higgs. “It’s the way I’ve been expecting us to play all year. Hopefully we can continue to play at the level we played at tonight.”

At Spokane Falls, poor shooting did in the Sasquatch, despite a 15-point, 13-rebound performance by Jen Clark.

CCS, which shot 36 percent from the field, was a fine 18 for 38 on two-point attempts, but 3 for 20 on 3-pointers.

Amy George scored 10 points for CCS. Nicole Kleopfer had seven assists and eight rebounds.

Dixie 73, North Idaho 51

It was a cold day Saturday in St. George, Utah, at least as far as the North Idaho College women’s basketball team was concerned.

The Cardinals shot 30 percent from the field and committed 19 turnovers in the loss to Dixie College.

NIC’s next game is at home Thursday against College of Southern Idaho.

Junior hockey

Keith Tobiason scored twice and goaltender Dan Chambers recorded 32 saves as the Spokane Braves defeated Grand Forks in Kootenay International Junior Hockey League play in the Eagles Ice-A-Rena.

Spokane earned its 10th victory of the season, offsetting 23 losses and three ties. Grand Forks fell to 6-28-1.
