Knights Defenders Pile Up The Points

East Valley was downright offensive about its defense.

The Knights scored 13 points after turnovers in the third quarter alone, rolling to a 64-44 win over Lewiston Saturday night in the EV gym.

East Valley stayed undefeated in the Border League to keep pace with rival West Valley.

“We played pretty well,” East Valley point guard Steve Henderson said. “That was probably one of our best defensive games of the year.”

The tone was set early, when a steal by Andrew Burgess became a beautiful Burgess-to-Henderson-to-Burgess layup for a 5-2 EV lead. Seconds later, Henderson stole the ball at mid-court and drove in for a breakaway layup.

After a Lewiston bucket, the Knights went on a 10-2 run, started by a Jeff Storey steal and layup, to make it 17-6 midway through the second quarter.

“The defense was excellent,” first-year East Valley coach Drew Vanderpool said. “It generated all kinds of offense.”

The Knights took a 31-22 lead at the half and were up by 11 when Austin Brown turned a tough drive through the key into a three-point play with 3 minutes left in the third quarter. That started a 9-0 run, with back-to-back steals and layups by Henderson and Storey, for a 49-29 lead. Eight different Knights scored in the third quarter.

“Coach said to come out intense in the second half and just take it to them,” Henderson said.

The Bengals battled back with an 11-1 run to open the fourth quarter but EV got the final 10 points of the game in the last 3:07.

“We’ve been doing that, playing roller coaster,” Vanderpool said. “We really tried to work on that. I think they were trying too hard.”

Andrew Burgess led EV with 20 points, 11 coming in the second quarter.

The unbeaten Eagles used a 12-2 run to build a 17-7 first-quarter lead and sped away from the visiting Vikings.

WV’s Brad Groh scored 21, including two slam dunks.

WV had nipped CdA 58-57 less than two weeks ago.
