Reception Will Honor Artist Ilse Kilian-Tan

A lecture and reception honoring artist Ilse Kilian-Tan will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in the public meeting room at Indian Trail Branch Library, 4909 W. Barnes Rd.

The slide-discussion focuses on the two pieces Kilian-Tan designed and created for the library. She will also show slides of some of her other work displayed in Anchorage, Alaska, and Leipzig, Germany.

Attention playwrights

Spokane Civic Theatre is accepting entries for its 16th Playwright’s Forum Festival in June.

There will be adult and youth divisions (high school or younger). The forum is open to all playwrights, but preference is given to those within a 500-mile radius of Spokane.

Entry deadline is Feb. 1.

Lecture series

Jeff Berner, an artist, collector and curator of “Fluxus” art, a kind of non-art-like art, will speak as part of the Visiting Artist Lecture Series sponsored by the Cheney Cowles Museum, Eastern Washington University and Spokane Falls Community College.

Berner will be at the EWU Fine Arts Auditorium in Cheney at noon on Jan. 20, and at 7:30 p.m. he will be at Cheney Cowles Museum, 2316 W. First, at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 20.

Berner will speak at the SFCC Student Union Building SUB Lounges A & B at 11:30 a.m. on Jan. 21.

Classes

The Tam Tam Mandingue school offers drumming classes for every ability and interest level, taught by Michael Moon Bear, founder and director of MALIDOMA! World Drum & Dance Ensemble.

Moon Bear is owner of Moon Shadow, 2 N. Howard, where several classes are taught. Group and private classes teach basic drum strokes, hand techniques, beginning and intermediate rhythms and traditional uses of rhythms of the Mandingue people.

Intensive workshops offer instruction in all five traditional instruments of the djembe orchestra: djembe, kenkeni, sangban, dununba and bell.

Flutist Michael Faust will offer a free three-hour master class at the Eastern Washington University Music Building in Cheney at 6 p.m. Jan. 18. Call 326-3136 for more information.

A full array of winter classes, workshops and master classes begin the week of Jan. 18 at the Spokane Art School, 920 N. Howard.

Children’s classes include “Mom and Me” for 2-year-olds and their mothers, primary art and ceramics. Adult classes include drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture and photography.

Auditions

Spokane Civic Theatre will hold auditions for its Studio Theatre production of “The Compleat Works of Wllm. Shkspr (abridged)” at 7 p.m. Jan. 18 and 19 at Cavanaughs Inn at the Park.

Director Troy Nickerson needs three men, 20 to 45 years old, for the production which runs March 5-27.

Auditioners are asked to read the script, available at the theater: 325-1413.

“Raisin Head No. 1, Red Boots,” a painting by Spokane artist Edie Dunlap, has been accepted into the Arizona Watercolor Association show, “National Watercolor Exhibition 1999,” in the West Valley Art Museum, Thursday to March 21.

Dunlap will attend the award presentation Jan. 23.
