IN PASSING

Jose Vela Zanetti, a Spanish painter best known for his mural depicting human rights at the U.N. headquarters in New York, died Monday. He was 85.

Dr. Paul M. Zoll, a heart specialist whose research led to the pacemaker and the defibrillator devices that have helped millions of patients, died Tuesday at 87.

Michel Petrucciani, a jazz pianist who recorded more than a dozen albums and drew an international following despite suffering from osteogenesis imperfecta, died Wednesday at 36. He was being treated for a lung infection.

ENGAGEMENT

Britain’s Prince Edward Wednesday announced his engagement to Sophie Rhys-Jones, a public relations consultant.

KUDOS

Director Norman Jewison will be honored at this year’s Academy Awards for his decades of moviemaking. The director of such movies as “A Soldier’s Story,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Moonstruck” and “In the Heat of the Night,” will receive the Thalberg Award.
