Effort To Paint Over Graffiti Lauded

A local group with an unusual take on beautifying Spokane spent hundreds of hours last year with paint brushes in hand, police report.

Paint Over Graffiti, an informal coalition of businesses and social agencies, painted over 100,765 square feet of graffiti last year.

The 237 volunteers worked 1,141 hours, using 367 gallons of paint. Most of the work was on the Interstate 90 corridor between Maple and Division, police said.

Participating were juvenile offenders and volunteers from Spokane County Juvenile Court Services, the state Juvenile Rehabilitation Administration, Riverview Youth Center and North Hill Recreation Group.

The bulk of the paint was donated by Eagle Hardware, Parker Paint, ShopKo, Gary’s, Paint Chips and United Paint.
