Lake City Topples Post Falls

Offensive rebounds provide a second glance and second aim at the basket.

And the visiting Lake City girls proved to be very hungry for seconds Thursday night, defeating Post Falls 55-49 and earning their second Border League victory over the Trojans (10-3 in league, 10-4 overall) this season in front of about 400 fans.

“If you give us extra chances (we’re) going to hurt somebody,” Lake City coach Dave Fealko said as his team improved to 10-5, 9-4.

LC senior Kellie Stern did most of the hurting, grabbing 10 rebounds; seven of them were offensive.

“She’s been doing that all year,” Fealko said of Stern’s physical play in the paint. “She’s just strong. She gets her hands on it. She did a nice job for us.”

LC junior Cassie Bro dominated the scoring with a game-high 24 points, 13 of which came in the critical fourth quarter.

A nine-point run by Bro added to a 55-46 lead for the T-Wolves. In the final minute, Bro nailed a 3-pointer from the top of the key, then converted on a layin off a steal for the final score.

Although she said she wasn’t trying for the baseline jumper, that’s where Bro was most effective.

“I tend to always get the shot there,” said Bro, who hit 8 of 14 from the field, including three 3s. Most of Bro’s shots were made from the left side, despite having to go up against Post Falls’ standout Janelle Ruen. Desiree Johnson led the Trojans with 20 points off 7-of-11 shooting. Ruen contributed 14 points even though she was the focus of LC’s defense.

“Our pressure on the offguards caused problems when it was out of Ruen’s hands,” Fealko said.

“ Erin Colwell’s turnaround 7-footer in the final 30 seconds of the first half gave the lead to the Timberwolves 29-26 at the intermission. Colwell scored all seven of her points in the second quarter. She grabbed six rebounds in the first half.

LC beat the Trojans 57-43 earlier this season.

Patty Stranger had a season-high nine assists as the Vikings defeated the visiting Bengals to tie Post Falls for first place.

Krissy Ruiz added eight first-quarter points and Dani Bielec made all five of her field-goal attempts for CdA.
