America’S Farm Woes
Harry Knobbe, left, owner of Knobbe Feedyard in West Point, Neb., and Lewis Reppert, a local pork producer, load hams. Their agriculture awareness group sent 500 hams to Congress, Vice President Al Gore and Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman. Another 1,000 hams were sent to Nebraska consumer organizations and food pantries. The drive was an effort to raise awareness about the plight of the nation’s pork producers. For each $12 ham, the farmer who raised the pig gets only 78 cents.
