Beavers’ Late Rally Turns Back Cougars

The Oregon State Beavers outscored Washington State 9-2 in the final 2:45 en route to a 57-54 Pacific-10 Conference victory over the Cougars in Corvallis, Ore., on Friday.

Oregon State (10-4, 2-3) trailed 52-48 after a 3-point basket by WSU’s Alke Dietel with 2:45 remaining. The Beavers then turned the ball over on their subsequent possession.

But WSU guard Tricia Lamb, the conference’s leading scorer, double-dribbled with 2:03 to play, giving OSU new life. The Beavers capitalized on a three-point play by Vanessa Morris on a driving layup to draw within 52-51 with 1:47 to play.

The Beavers then stole the ball, and Tammy Arnold’s basket with 56 seconds left put OSU on top 53-52. After two WSU misses, OSU stretched the lead to 55-52 on a rebound basket by Reda Kakeranaite with 32 seconds to play.

Lamb scored 26 points for the Cougars (7-6, 1-3) , including 15 of her team’s final 18.

Freshman Shaquala Williams scored a career-high 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Ducks (13-3, 4-1) continued their recent dominance over the Huskies (7-6, 3-1) in a Pac-10 game at Eugene, Ore.

Williams was 10 for 12 from the field and 5 for 5 from the free-throw line to lead Oregon past Washington for the sixth straight time.

Washington’s top two scoring threats, Jamie Redd and Amber Hall, had 14 and 18 points respectively, but shot only a combined 10 of 32 from the field. Washington shot 29 percent from the field and was held 22 points below its average.

Susan Woolf tossed in a game-high 21 points and Rikki Jackson and Alli Nieman added 17 and 16, respectively, to spark the Vandals (9-6, 2-1) to a Big West Conference victory over the Titans (2-13, 0-3) in Fullerton, Calif.

Woolf connected on 7 of 9 shots from the floor, including 2 of 4 from 3-point range, and 5 of 6 free throws for the Vandals.

Idaho made eight 3-pointers, six of them coming in 12 attempts in the first half as the Vandals took a 46-30 lead.
