Cougars Rise Up, Stun Cardinals 56-40

Chewelah showed its old spark Friday.

Josh Parrish made 7 of 13 field goals for 14 points and finished with 12 rebounds to lead the Cougars over visiting Medical Lake 56-40 in Great Northern League boys basketball.

Chewelah placed fifth at last year’s State 2A Tournament but had sputtered to a 3-5 start and lost two of its first three league games.

Brian Carpenter added 5-of-10 shooting from the field and 14 points for the Cougars. Jeff Mitchell hit 4 of 6 3-pointers for ML, sixth at state last year.

Jim Murphy and Ray Lieske combined to hit 8 of 13 3-pointers and the second-place Rams hit 9 of 19 overall to defeat the Eagles at Nine Mile Falls.

Riverside finished 25 of 49 from the floor, with Murphy scoring 16 points and Lieske 9. Lakeside’s Pat Day scored 14 of his 21 points in the second half and finished 9 of 15 from the field.

Adam Swinyard scored 20 of his 28 points in the second half and the 10th-ranked Stags overcame 18-of-39 free-throw shooting to hold off the host Grizzlies.

DP shot 25 free throws in the final quarter.

Brent Cummings and Ryan Harms scored 18 of their combined 37 points in the first quarter as the second-ranked Greyhounds defeated the visiting Indians.

Cummings, who scored 21, had 10 rebounds for Pullman, as did Fred Rurangirwa. Pullman had a 55-28 rebounding edge.
