U-Hi Shows Improvement, But CV Completes A Sweep The Stinky Sneaker, However, Was A Shoe Divided As Rivals Tie

University kept the stink in the stands Friday night.

Less than a month after being embarrassed by Central Valley, the Titans rallied to push the fifth-ranked Bears to the limit in the Stinky Sneaker spirit game between the Valley rivals.

The Titans came up short by a 54-42 count in the Greater Spokane League girls basketball game before a packed house at U-Hi, but that was a far cry from last month’s thrashing.

CV led the first encounter 51-9 at halftime and won 94-48.

The schools tied in the spirit competition for the first time after CV had won the Stinky Sneaker the last three years.

“This time, I think we had more confidence in our system,” first-year U-Hi coach Mark Stinson said. “With kids, and girls basketball in particular, confidence is everything.”

That’s what CV expected.

“Every team does better against a team they lost big to,” CV forward Tori Bragdon said. “They have more intensity.”

This time, CV didn’t make almost every shot and U-Hi didn’t miss everything.

Ultimately, the game was won at the foul line, where CV made 16 of 24 and the Titans were 0-3.

In the first game, CV shot 59 percent from the field in the first half and U-Hi shot 9 percent.

“Mark had a lot of ammunition to use to focus his kids and I thought he did a great job doing that,” CV coach Dale Poffenroth said. “He’s got too good of ballclub to be down.”

The Bears surged ahead 33-16 in the second quarter, but U-Hi closed within 13 at the half. The Titans got within nine early in the third quarter, but CV surged back to an 18-point lead. Again, the Titans came back, but couldn’t get closer than 12, even if the Bears couldn’t put them away.

“The last quarter of the last game they came back,” CV forward Marisa Liepman said. “They are a good team.”

Liepman had nine of her game-high 13 points in the third quarter after scoring just two in the first half.

“I don’t think I was focused,” Liepman said. “I wasn’t getting any rebounds.”

Bragdon picked up the slack with 10 rebounds.

“They blocked out hard so it made me want to go harder,” Bragdon said. “I’m not a big shooter, so I don’t look for that glory. I have to play defense and rebound.”

Stinson wasn’t happy his team lost, but the improvement gave him reason for optimism.

“Everybody stepped up,” he said. “There’s no magic to what CV does. They’re just better at most positions. We have to catch up.”

The sixth-ranked Bullpups trailed by two at halftime before building a lead in the third quarter at NC.

Prep hit just 6 of 20 free throws.

Alice Sterns had 14 points and 14 rebounds for the Indians.

The one-two punch of Morgan Bennett and Courney Ferguson carried the 10th-ranked Panthers past the visiting Tigers.

Bennett hit 8 of 15 shots for 20 points to go with seven assists and seven rebounds. Ferguson hit 6 of 11 3-pointers for 18 points and dished off five assists.

Freshman Sarah Bassett matched her career high with 13 points for LC.

Kate Foster hit one of two free throws with 2 seconds left to lift the Saxons to victory over the visiting Highlanders.

Rochelle Stockman’s 3-pointer with 8 seconds to go tied the game for Shadle. Stockman finished with 15 points. Teammate Amy Ridings had 20.

The Pirates, led by Sarah Bayne, picked up their first win of the season, dominating the boards and avenging a loss to the visiting Wildcats.

Bayne had 12 rebounds, Molly Abrahamson had 10, Crystal Perry nine and Char Hose eight. Katie Logue had six steals and five assists and Courtney Davis 19 points for Rogers.
