Chiefs Break Out With Rout Of Medicine Hat

The Spokane Chiefs scored early and often en route to an 11-2 victory over the Medicine Hat Tigers in Western Hockey League action Saturday night at The Arena.

Ty Jones scored his 14th goal of the season just 1:03 into the game to give Spokane a 1-0 lead.

Two minutes later Brad Ference scored on a power-play goal and the Chiefs led 2-0.

Tim Smith stretched Spokane’s lead to 3-0 at the midway point of the first period. Smith’s goal, his fourth of the year, also came on a power play.

Jared Smyth scored his 10th goal of the year, yet another power-play netter, at the 15:10 mark and the Chiefs ended the first period up 4-0.

Spokane stayed on the attack to open the second period. Daniel Bohac notched his 17th and 18th goals of the season at 2:13 and 7:16 to put the Chiefs up 6-0.

Medicine Hat finally got on the scoreboard on a power-play goal off the stick of Kevin Labbe.

The Chiefs opened the third period in the same fashion they opened the game.

Dan Vandermeer scored an unassisted goal at 1:14, his 11th of the year, to put Spokane up 7-1.

It was 8-1 after Lynn Loyns found the net at the 7:27 mark. Kris Callaway picked up an assist on the play for his first point scored in the WHL.

Spokane ends its five-game road trip with a 2-2-1 mark and is now 13-26-6 overall.

Medicine Hat (11-33-1) has now lost 14 games in a row. Its last win came in Spokane on Dec. 12.

The Chiefs, who have struggled to score on the power play all season, connected on 6 of 8 opportunities. Medicine Hat had scored just once on its 10 power-play chances.
