Karlee Poirier Central Valley Year: Sophomore Sport: Gymnastics

Karlee Poirier says she doesn’t have a clue how she did it.

Last week, the Central Valley sophomore won the floor exercise and the uneven bars on the way to the all-around victory in a four-way Greater Spokane League gymnastics meet at Shadle Park.

Her previous-best effort had been a first-place tie in floor. “I just was having fun,” she said. “I just do my best. I like to focus on the team winning because we’re second in the GSL.”

In fact, she didn’t even know she had won the bars until she read it in the paper the next morning.

Poirier was a club gymnast for seven years, and CV coach Kim Brunelle didn’t know who she was at the beginning of the season. The coach said she has been “overwhelmingly” surprised.

“She knows what she’s doing,” Brunelle said. Poirier is trying to recover from a back injury suffered in an early-season meet when she fell off the bars.

She hopes to qualify for this spring’s State 4A meet.

“I already foresee her as one of the top 10 gymnasts, easy, at state (before she graduates),” Brunelle said. “As long as her interest holds. I think she’s having fun.”
