Turner’S Basket, Foul Shots Pull Gu To Victory
College women’s basketball
Holly Turner, who missed one chance to lock up the victory, capitalized on a second, hitting two free throws with 18 seconds left Thursday night as Gonzaga University rallied to edge University of San Francisco 63-59 in a West Coast Conference game in Martin Centre.
Turner finished with 18 points to lead both teams in a game marked by poor shooting. Her 3-point basket with 2:24 to go put Gonzaga ahead to stay. After she and Jessica Waltz each missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw opportunity, she wrapped up the victory following a foul by San Francisco’s Melanie Turner.
GU (6-11, 2-3) made only 34.5 percent of its field goal attempts, hitting just 20 of 58. USF (5-12, 0-5), paced by Sarah Wanless’ 17 points, made 23 of 60 for 38.3 percent.
