Bears Have The Last Word Hebden’S Two Late Free Throws Give No. 2 CV 45-43 Win Over No. 6 Ferris

Just in case Jake Hebden’s prayer wasn’t answered, Patrick Libey went for the other extreme - humor.

Actually, maybe it took a little of both for Hebden to hit two crucial free throws with 15 seconds left to give No. 2 Central Valley an exciting 45-43 win over No. 6 Ferris on Tuesday night.

“I said a little prayer and then Libey came up and said they are just normal free throws, but I’m glad I’m not you,” Hebden said. “I’m glad I got those first two out of the way. My last two I felt better. I was used to the noise of the crowd.”

After Andre Atkins’ rushed, off-balanced 3-point attempt missed at the buzzer, the undefeated Bears had a two-game lead over Ferris and Gonzaga Prep in Greater Spokane League boys basketball. Both of Ferris’ losses are to CV and both of Prep’s are to Ferris. Prep and CV meet on Feb. 4 and 12.

Hebden missed the first of two free throws with 54 seconds left as CV took a 43-41 lead. Cayce Biggestaff responded with a driving layup for Ferris to tie it with 41 seconds left.

Central Valley used hot shooting to lead throughout the first game. This time, Ferris clamped down defensively and took a 22-16 lead at the half, holding CV to 7-of-19 shooting and forcing eight turnovers.

“Our better play was on the defensive end,” Ferris coach Wayne Gilman said. “My job is to create ways for us to score, their job is to work their tails off at the other end. I felt they did a better job than I did.”

Then Kyle Boast and Libey got the Bears back into the game. Boast hit two 3s - he also had a tipin in between that the scorekeeper missed - to keep the Bears close. Then Libey scored all eight of his points in a row to put CV ahead 34-33, except for that missed basket. That meant Ferris was up, until Dustin Boast beat the buzzer with a 3 and CV was finally ahead 35-33.

“It just happened,” Dustin Boast said. “We were really missing (Jeff) Priebe with his sprained ankle and Craig (Eigenhuis) had the flu, so guys had to step up.”

After Libey fed Dustin Boast for a layup to open the fourth quarter, the Saxons scored six straight, the last four by Jeremy Williams, to regain the lead.

It stayed close until the final frantic seconds.

“It could have gone either way,” Gilman said. “I’m kind of disappointed we didn’t get a better shot with 13 seconds left. That was my fault.”

Greg Johnson scored 19 points, hitting 9 of 9 from the foul line, and had five assists and three steals to lead the Bullpups past the visiting Wildcats.

Kelvin Bacon grabbed 10 rebounds for Prep, which steadily pulled away before breaking the game open in the fourth quarter.

Senior guard Dashawn Bedford scored 11 fourth-quarter points and the Pirates went 10 for 10 at the free-throw line in the final period to defeat the visiting Titans.

Bedford also had six rebounds and two steals for Rogers, which took the lead with 2 minutes left after using a full-court press.

Pirates Greg Pugh and Josh Wallen had eight rebounds apiece and Phil Renz had seven rebounds and 12 points for U-Hi.

Demetruis Scott had 14 points and Charlie Howlett, Andrew McGinn and Jeremy Johnson added 12 apiece for Shadle.
