Cardinals Wrestlers Trip Yakima

Erik Smith got North Idaho College started and Jeremy Wynia put the cap on it as the Cardinals pinned a 25-13 non-league wrestling loss on Yakima Valley College Tuesday night.

The Cardinals made sure assistant Kevin Roberts, running the show in the absence of head coach Pat Whitcomb, didn’t have to sweat in his first solo match. NIC won the first five matches for a 21-0 lead, then weathered a five-match Yakima win streak before Wynia’s major decision at 141 ended it.

Smith squeaked out a 10-9 decision at 149 in one of the closest matches of the night to start the Cardinals (12-2) on the way.

There were no pins, but three Cardinals - Brandon Springer at 165, Curtis Owen at 174 and Ry Stone at 184 - posted technical falls.
