Ferris Continues To Make Trouble

Kelly McCaffery scored a career-high 16 points Tuesday night, including the clinching free throw with 5 seconds left, as Ferris defeated a ranked team for the second straight game.

The Saxons rallied from 10 points down in the fourth quarter to defeat No. 5 Central Valley 48-44 at CV Tuesday.

“We know the GSL doesn’t think we’re a bad team, but they don’t necessarily think we’re the team to beat,” McCaffery said. “We wanted to send a message.”

Katie Foster’s 3-pointer pulled Ferris within one before sophomore reserve Heather Coombs hit from the right baseline to put the Saxons up 41-40 with 2:46 to play. After CV missed four shots, Coombs scored again on a feed from Courtney Lynn and Ferris stayed on top.

“We’re getting there,” Ferris coach Art Rojas said. “Those patches of bad are shorter and shorter.”

All nine Ferris players scored.

Friday, Ferris defeated Gonzaga Prep, which was ranked fourth and tied with CV and Mead for the league lead.

“His kids just outplayed ours,” CV coach Dale Poffenroth said. “We were a little tentative; we haven’t been in that situation and he’s been there all year.”

Morgan Bennett scored 23 points and Courtney Ferguson added 20, hitting four 3-pointers, as the Panthers beat the Highlanders at Shadle.

Aubrie Caldwell scored 12 points, one more than Katie Schurra, to lead Shadle Park’s balanced attack.

Sarah O’Brien and Carly Barnes had seven and six steals, respectively, as the Bullpups defeated the visiting Wildcats.

Prep had 21 total steals and Juliann Laney had six of her team’s 11 assists.

The visiting Titans broke the game open by outscoring the Pirates 19-3 in the second quarter and Rheanna Arnold scored a career-high 14 points.
