G-Prep Clinches Tie For League Title

Unbeaten Gonzaga Prep clinched at least a share of the Greater Spokane League dual wrestling championship Wednesday night by blasting North Central 49-7 at NC.
The Bullpups, who raised their record to 8-0 to keep a one-match lead over University (7-1), can win the title outright tonight when they entertain Mt. Spokane in the final GSL dual for both schools.
U-High, which routed Shadle Park (1-7) 58-10 Wednesday night, closes its dual season tonight at Central Valley.
The best match in G-Prep’s decisive win over NC (3-5) came at 122 pounds, where Bullpup Brett Roberts outpointed Dan Harris 5-4.
G-Prep received pins from Luke Orlando at 275 pounds and Sean Malone at 148. In Wednesday’s other matches, Lewis and Clark (3-5) upset Mead (5-3) 35-28; Ferris (2-6) held off Mt. Spokane (0-8) 35-26; and Central Valley (6-2) defeated Rogers (5-3) 39-26.
In LC’s win over Mead, it was 178-pounder David Kulisch who sealed the victory with his 7-1 decision over Aaron Fink. Teammate David Sloan used a third-period takedown to win his 158-pound match and Peter Cowger won his 108-pound match 11-10 by scoring a late two-point reversal against Nathan Hawley.
Ferris overcame the disqualification of 108-pounder Blake Yonago for an illegal move to outlast Mt. Spokane. Terry Cressey scored a reversal for the Saxons with 6 seconds left to beat Curt Bailey 12-11 in their 115-pound match, and teammate Ben Riddle used a reversal with 8 seconds left to edge Cameron Smith 10-9 at 158 pounds.
CV’s win over Rogers included an upset at 101 pounds, where Bears freshman Josh Heuett beat Pirates sophomore Mike Kinkgraf 13-5. CV also got a second-period pin from John Dashback at 115. Rogers’ Anthony Kelp rallied from a 7-3 deficit midway through his 129-pound match to score a 10-7 win.
U-High lost its opening match against Shadle, but won the next nine in building a 50-3 lead. Titans freshman Dan Johnson, in only his second varsity match, scored a pin at 108 pounds. Teammate Ryan Montang used a first-period reversal to pin Justin Eballar in their 101-pound match.
