Halee Haptonstall Newport Year: Senior Sport: Basketball Position: Point Guard
Newport senior Halee Haptonstall has been to state in track three times. In volleyball, she’s gone twice.
But the Grizzlies 5-foot-6 point guard hasn’t been there in basketball. This season looks to be her best chance.
“If we keep playing really well together, I think it will happen for us,” she said. “We have to keep working as hard as we have been. We should pull it out. But we still have a lot of steps to go.”
Newport took one of those steps Friday, when it broke Lakeside’s 34-game winning streak with an 82-68 Great Northern League victory. The Grizzlies remain undefeated at 13-0 overall and 7-0 in league.
Haptonstall had 12 points, including two 3-pointers, and eight assists. Against Pullman on Saturday, she scored 15 points in her team’s 68-64 road win. She made four 3-pointers and had a three-point play.
The 17-year-old Haptonstall said she had been in a slump before last weekend’s games.
“That was really big,” she said of the wins. “It was a pretty crucial time and we pulled it off. We played really well as a team. I couldn’t have done it by myself.”
Shooting isn’t a priority for Haptonstall. She prides herself in assists and steals.
“I will shoot if it’s there but I try not to,” she said. “I look for more open people.”
