Souper Bowl Of Caring Raises Money For Needy

Football fans will be glued to the television Sunday for the big game, but churches all over the country will be taking the opportunity to raise money for the needy.

Sunday is Souper Bowl of Caring VIII, a national effort that asks parishioners to put $1 in a soup pot as they leave church. The effort started with a single youth group at Spring Valley Presbyterian Church in Columbia, S.C. It went national in 1993 and last year 8,600 churches raised $1,700,000.

Donations are kept in the local communities, with each church reporting its totals to Souper Bowl organizers and then donating the proceeds to a local charity of its choice.

Several North Side churches are planning to participate this year, including St. Peter Lutheran Church, 4620 N. Regal. Last year’s effort raised $57 and was donated to the Interfaith Hospitality Network.
