Youths Participating In Souper Bowl Church Groups Will Snag Donations To Gain Ground Against Hunger

Football fans will be glued to the television Sunday for the big game, but churches all over the country will take the opportunity to raise money for the needy.

Sunday is Souper Bowl of Caring VIII, a national effort that asks parishioners to put $1 in a soup pot as they leave church. The effort started with a single youth group at Spring Valley Presbyterian Church in Columbia, S.C.

It went national in 1993, and last year 8,600 churches raised $1.7 million.

Donations are kept in the local communities, with each church reporting its total to Souper Bowl organizers and then donating the proceeds to a local charity of its choice.

Several South Side churches are planning to participate this year, including Hamblen Park Presbyterian Church, 4102 S. Crestline. Last year the church’s youths collected $180 for the Union Gospel Mission along with four boxes of food for the Westminster Food Bank.

Other participating churches include St. Mark’s Lutheran and Cheney United Methodist.

Super Bowl party planned

Manito United Methodist Church is hosting a Super Bowl party beginning at 3 p.m. Sunday. Football fans can watch the game while nonsport fanatics can watch a movie or play games. Those attending are asked to bring snacks to share.

The church is located at 3220 S. Grand Blvd.

Fairchild choir to performs Sunday

The Fairchild Air Force Base Gospel Choir will perform during the 10 a.m. worship service Sunday at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 5720 S. Perry. All are invited to attend.
