Washington State University Names Savage Vice President

Washington State University on Thursday announced a long-anticipated administrative shift that promotes Sally Savage to vice president.

Savage, university counsel and chief of staff for WSU President Sam Smith, will take over as vice president for administration on Feb. 1.

Her $126,000-a-year salary will not change.

Savage will have oversight of the Office of Human Relations and Resources.

Ernestine Madison, who currently has that responsibility, will become associate vice president for administration. She will assist Smith on human relations and diversity matters.

Faculty personnel, who had been under Madison, will shift to the provost’s office.

Smith said the shift will allow Provost Gretchen Bataille to devote more time to expanding academic programs in Spokane, increasing research and managing the 10-year re-accreditation process now under way.

Savage, a University of Idaho law school graduate, joined the Washington Attorney General’s Office in 1977, rising to senior assistant attorney general and WSU division chief. She began working for Smith in 1990.
